Before we released 2.0.0.12 Dave (our developer) and I went over the Volume Boost code.  It is simply 0dB for off then +6dB for on.   There is definitely nothing that is causing clipping from our side.  From that last example you sent me I can see the clipping and you say the crackles are certainly loud enough to be distracting.  We will continue to investigate this issue.

Did you try turning on Volume Boost in the SETTINGS tab?  That should bring the level up to what you remember.
